Tennessee company implicated in prison health care lawsuit

Doctors and other health care providers are an integral part of modern society, saving and improving our lives every day. The importance of their careers to the health and safety of their patients is shown by the amount of training and insurance doctors require to legally practice in Tennessee and elsewhere in the United States.

Mistakes made by doctors, or their failure to act in a timely manner, are therefore, actionable in the legal realm. An attorney can help victims and the survivors of medical malpractice address mistakes that led to damage or a failure to recover for a patient.

These rights extend to those in the custody of the government as well. Concerns have been raised over jails and prisons in which a Tennessee-based company was contracted to provide inmates with medical care. Family members of victims claim that jail personnel refused to give vital medication to their charges, resulting in injury and death.

Records on jails in St. Louis, Missouri, show at least six inmate deaths in fourteen months preceding March 2017, with at least three due to drug overdoses or complications of chronic medical issues. A Tennessee company was paid $7.6 million to handle care for inmates in these and other facilities.

A federal lawsuit filed after these deaths came to light claims that medical care in these facilities is inhumane and violates constitutional rights of prisoners. Although correctional medical care is complicated, all people have the right to expect the best possible medical care.
