Medical mistakes cause the third-most deaths in the U.S.

When you think of leading causes of death in the United States, you probably think of things like car accidents, cancer and heart disease. According to some studies, you should also think of medical errors. Researchers claim these cause the third-most deaths in the country.

The study claims that medical errors can be linked to 251,000 fatalities annually. That puts them higher than things like strokes, Alzheimer's, accidents, and respiratory disease.

The professor who spearheaded the study, and who works at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, said that the final results show that people were being killed by the care that they received, not from the issues and diseases that put them in the hospital in the first place.

If his numbers are right, he has discovered that about 700 people die every single day from medical errors or the complications that follow. That's just under one out of every 10 deaths -- 9.5 percent of the fatalities on an annual basis.

People often fear medical mistakes when they go to the hospital. They hear stories about surgeons removing the wrong limb or the wrong eye, or they read about people going through surgery without working painkillers, even though the drugs have paralyzed them. What this study suggests is that they should also be concerned simply about living through the whole process.

Have you lost a loved one in the hospital, and do you think a negligent doctor was the real problem? If so, you may be able to seek financial compensation for funeral costs, lost wages, and much more.
